Unique Form and Foliage

This shrub features stiff, arching branches and leathery grey-green leaves that give it a bold, structural appearance. Pittosporum kirkii has a spreading form and typically reaches 1.5–2 metres tall and wide, making it ideal as a filler plant in shady areas or on banks and slopes.

Landscaping Uses

Pittosporum kirkii is well suited for native plant gardens, shaded borders, or where a more unusual specimen plant is desired. It works beautifully under taller trees or in bush-style landscapes and provides excellent contrast when combined with ferns or low groundcovers.

Growing Conditions

This plant thrives in partial to full shade and prefers free-draining, slightly moist soil. It tolerates dry periods once established and is hardy in most parts of New Zealand. Its ability to thrive in challenging, low-light environments makes it particularly valuable.

Maintenance Tips

Very little maintenance is needed once established. Occasional trimming can be done to maintain shape, and mulching will help conserve moisture and suppress weeds. A general fertiliser applied in early spring can support healthy growth.
