Pittosporum ‘Gold Star’ is a NZ native shrub grown for its colourful foliage. It features glossy, dark green leaves with golden seams and new foliage that is yellow-light green. Small and scented, purple flowers are borne amidst the foliage in spring. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide and can be contained with trimming which also encourages new growth. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of most soil types, except extreme wet or dry, and will grow in shaded conditions though tends to become more open. It is also tolerant of moderate wind, coastal conditions, periods of dry, and frost once established. Pittosporum ‘Gold Star’ is commonly included in coastal gardens, trimmed into a hedge, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or planted for shelter or screening.
