Growing Pimelea tomentosa Successfully in NZ

Pimelea tomentosa thrives in full sun to part shade with well-drained soils. Plant in autumn or spring for best root establishment. Suitable for native gardens, borders, and containers. Tolerates drought and coastal exposure, making it a versatile addition to a wide range of garden settings.

Pimelea tomentosa Care Tips

Pimelea tomentosa is a hardy native shrub that thrives in full sun and free-draining soil. Water regularly during the first year to help it establish, then only in extended periods of dryness. It dislikes wet or heavy soils, so avoid planting in poorly drained areas. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the base. Minimal pruning is required; trim lightly after flowering if needed. A light application of native plant fertiliser in spring will support healthy growth.

Plant Size and Spacing

Pimelea tomentosa is a small, spreading native shrub that typically grows to 30–60 cm tall and 60–100 cm wide. It has a moderate growth rate, forming a dense, low mound over time. For mass planting or groundcover use, space plants 50–70 cm apart to allow for full spread while ensuring good air circulation. It’s ideal for coastal gardens, rocky sites, or native landscapes where a compact, low-maintenance shrub is desired.
