Pieris japonica Variegata is a lovely shrub grown for its foliage and flowers. This compact, rounded shrub carries chains of white flower buds that open into white, urn shaped flowers. They are borne through winter and spring on pendent like clusters on graceful stems. The flowers are mildly fragrant and are produced from winter through spring. The foliage is dark green with a cream-white rim. It typically grows to about 1.5 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. Leaf colouring and flowering will be reduced as the levels of shade are increased and it is frost hardy once established. Pieris japonica Variegata makes for a superb specimen in a small garden and is well suited to growing in a container, adding to mixed plantings, formal gardens, or for border planting.
