Pieris japonica Sarabande is an attractive and popular shrub grown for both its foliage and flowers. This compact, rounded shrub produces flower buds that open to reveal masses of small, white-cream flowers. The flowers in spring are like miniature bells and literally coat the plant. New growth is light green but becomes darker with age. It typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide, growing best on a well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. Leaf colouring and flowering will be reduced as the levels of shade are increased and it is frost hardy once established. Pieris japonica Sarabande makes for a superb specimen in a small garden and is well suited to growing in a container, adding to mixed plantings, formal gardens, for border planting, or planting around the barbecue area.
