Photinia ‘Super Red’ is one of the more popular hedging plants due to its very colourful foliage. New growth is bright red and ages to become mid-dark green which results in a glossy plant with dual colouring through spring and summer. This quick growing evergreen can reach 3 m tall and 2.5 m wide but is commonly trimmed to sizes significantly less than this. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. This is a reasonably hardy plant that will tolerate moderate frost, dry periods, some wind, and most soil conditions, barring extreme wet and dry. Photinia ‘Super Red’ is commonly grown as an attractive and dense hedge but is also well suited to being used for shelter and screening, and as a backdrop for smaller plants.
