How to grow Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage) in NZ

Perovskia atriplicifolia grows best in full sun with well drained soil and good airflow. Choose a warm open position to encourage strong flowering, healthy growth, and vibrant foliage colour. This hardy perennial tolerates poor and dry soils once established but dislikes wet ground during winter. Water regularly during establishment, then only occasionally once plants are established. Adding compost and grit to the soil at planting time helps improve drainage and encourages strong root development.

Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage) care tips

Perovskia atriplicifolia is low maintenance and benefits from annual pruning during late winter or early spring. Cut plants back to around 20 cm above ground level to encourage fresh new growth and strong flowering stems for the coming season. Feed lightly with a balanced garden fertiliser during spring to support healthy development. Water during prolonged dry periods while plants establish. Avoid overwatering mature plants as they prefer drier growing conditions once established.

Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage) size, spacing, and growth rate

Perovskia atriplicifolia typically grows to around 1 to 1.5 metres tall and spreads up to 1 metre wide with a naturally upright airy habit. It has a moderate to fast growth rate and quickly forms a striking flowering clump in suitable conditions. For borders or mass planting, space plants approximately 70 cm to 1 metre apart to allow healthy airflow and full development. Regular pruning helps maintain tidy growth and abundant flowering.

Landscaping uses for Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage)

Perovskia atriplicifolia is perfect for adding colour, texture, and movement to sunny garden spaces. It works beautifully in cottage gardens, mixed borders, dry gardens, and contemporary landscapes where the lavender blue flowers and silver foliage create soft seasonal contrast. This perennial pairs attractively with roses, salvias, ornamental grasses, and other drought tolerant plants in layered planting designs. Its long flowering season makes it especially useful for low maintenance and pollinator friendly gardens.
