Hello, I am considering ordering either the Osmanthus False Holly or the Pearly Gates. Can you please advise which one is the most fragrant, attractive and hardiest of the two. I live in a coastal area of Wellington and the soil can be a bit sandy, though I do add soil and compost when planting. Would also prefer that the shrub doesn't have a thick/heavy trunk. I will only need 3-4 plants. Cheers, Drew

It has a stronger fragrance, a softer and more compact appearance, and is well suited to coastal conditions like Wellington—even with sandy soil. It also won’t develop a heavy trunk over time. Osmanthus (False Holly) is hardier in some situations but tends to grow larger, more woody, and is less fragrant overall. Based on your preferences, we’d recommend Pearly Gates for your space.
