Osmanthus burkwoodii (Burkwood Osmanthus)

Osmanthus burkwoodii is an evergreen shrub grown for its attractive foliage and pretty flowers. The new foliage emerges with a glossy, light green colour, ages to become dark green, and is held densely on short stems. It produces clusters of small, highly-scented white flowers through summer and autumn as it grows to 3 m tall and the same wide. Osmanthus burkwoodii is commonly included in a mixed planting, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, trimmed into a hedge, planted around outdoor living areas, or used anywhere its beauty and fragrance can be enjoyed.

How to grow Osmanthus x burkwoodii in NZ

Osmanthus x burkwoodii thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers a sheltered position out of strong winds. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while establishing, but avoid waterlogging. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and fragrant flowering. Lightly prune after blooming to maintain shape and promote dense foliage. This hardy evergreen shrub tolerates frost well and is ideal for hedging, screening, or as a scented feature plant.

Osmanthus burkwoodii care tips

Plant in full sun or partial shade with protection from strong winds. Use fertile, well-draining soil and water regularly during dry spells, especially while young. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowers. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a neat shape and encourage bushiness. This hardy evergreen tolerates frost and benefits from a layer of mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Osmanthus x burkwoodii typically grows 2–3 m tall and 1.5–2 m wide, forming a dense, rounded shrub. For hedging, space plants about 1–1.2 m apart to achieve a full, even screen. Growth is moderate, with established plants adding around 20–30 cm of new growth each year in ideal conditions.
