Growing Olearia oleifolia Successfully in NZ

To grow Olearia oleifolia successfully in New Zealand, plant it in a sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained soil. This hardy, bushy shrub is well suited to coastal and exposed conditions, tolerating wind, salt spray, and light frosts. Water regularly during the first year to help it establish, then only during extended periods of dryness. Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage compact growth. It is an excellent choice for native gardens, shelter planting, and tough landscape sites.

Plant Size and Spacing

Olearia oleifolia typically grows 1.5 to 3 metres tall and 1 to 2 metres wide. For hedging or shelter planting, space plants 1 to 1.2 metres apart to create a dense, uniform screen. In mixed plantings, allow 1.5 to 2 metres between plants to accommodate natural growth and airflow.
