Growing Olearia nummularifolia Successfully in NZ

Olearia nummularifolia is a hardy, compact native shrub suited to New Zealand’s alpine and subalpine conditions. It thrives in full sun and free-draining soils, including rocky or poor ground. This plant tolerates wind, frost, and drought once established, making it ideal for high-altitude gardens, exposed sites, and low-maintenance landscapes. Water regularly during the first year, then only in extended dry periods. Its dense, tidy form and leathery foliage make it an excellent choice for structured native plantings.

Olearia nummularifolia Care Tips

Water regularly during the first year to help Olearia nummularifolia establish, especially in dry or exposed sites. Once established, it requires minimal care and is tolerant of drought, frost, and wind. Prune lightly to maintain a tidy shape and encourage bushiness. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed growth, but keep mulch clear of the stem. This hardy shrub generally doesn't need fertiliser and thrives in nutrient-poor, free-draining soils.

Plant Size and Spacing

Olearia nummularifolia typically grows 1–2 metres tall and 1–1.5 metres wide. For dense planting or low shelter, space plants 1 to 1.2 metres apart. In mixed or naturalistic plantings, allow 1.5 metres between plants to accommodate their full shape.
