Growing Olearia furfuracea Successfully in NZ

Olearia furfuracea, a hardy native shrub, thrives in a wide range of New Zealand conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and grows well in free-draining soils, including clay and sandy types. Tolerant of wind, drought, and coastal exposure, it’s ideal for shelterbelts, native plantings, and erosion control. Water regularly during establishment, then only in extended periods of dryness. Its dense, bushy habit and resilience make it a dependable choice for low-maintenance landscaping.

Olearia furfuracea Care Tips

Water young Olearia furfuracea plants regularly until well established, especially during dry spells. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and requires minimal care. Prune lightly to maintain a compact shape or encourage denser growth. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid piling mulch against the stem. It generally doesn't need fertiliser but can benefit from a light feed in spring if growth is slow. This hardy shrub thrives in exposed and coastal sites.

Plant Size and Spacing

Olearia furfuracea typically grows 2–4 metres tall and 1.5–2.5 metres wide. For shelterbelts or dense hedging, space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart. In mixed plantings allow 2 metres between plants to accommodate natural spread.
