Growing Olearia dartonii Successfully in NZ

Olearia dartonii is a hardy New Zealand native shrub well-suited to cold, exposed, and high-country environments. It thrives in full sun and well-draining soils, including those with gravelly or rocky textures. This plant is drought-tolerant once established and handles frost, wind, and poor soils with ease. It’s ideal for shelterbelts, native gardens, and erosion control. Water regularly during establishment, then only during extended periods of dryness. Its compact, bushy habit makes it a reliable low-maintenance option for tough conditions.

Olearia dartonii Care Tips

Water Olearia dartonii regularly during its first year to help it establish well, especially in dry areas. Once established, it’s highly tolerant of drought, frost, and wind. Prune lightly to maintain shape or encourage dense growth, particularly if used for shelter or hedging. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. It generally requires little to no fertiliser, making it ideal for low-maintenance native gardens and rugged sites.

Plant Size and Spacing

Olearia dartonii typically grows 1.5–3 metres tall and 1–2 metres wide. For hedging or shelter purposes, space plants 1 to 1.2 metres apart. In mixed plantings allow 1.5 to 2 metres between plants to accommodate their natural spread.
