How to grow Olearia coriacea in NZ

Olearia coriacea grows best in NZ when planted in full sun with free draining soils. It naturally thrives in dry, stony, and exposed environments, making it well suited to tough conditions where other plants may fail. Plant in autumn or spring to allow roots to establish before summer heat or winter cold. Mulching around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. With minimal care, this species will steadily establish into a hardy and attractive shrub.

Olearia coriacea care tips

Caring for Olearia coriacea is simple due to its natural resilience. Water young plants during their first growing season to assist establishment, after which they are very drought tolerant. Fertiliser is generally unnecessary as the plant is adapted to poor soils, though a light spring feed can support faster growth. Occasional trimming can be carried out to maintain shape or remove damaged branches. Its low maintenance needs make it a dependable shrub for restoration projects.

Olearia coriacea size, spacing, and growth rate

Olearia coriacea is typically a small to medium sized shrub that reaches 1.5–2.5 m tall and 1.5–2 m wide at maturity. Growth is moderate, with plants forming a naturally bushy and rounded habit. When planting in groups, space them about 1.5–2 m apart to allow for healthy development. Its compact size and toughness make it well suited for native revegetation projects, ecological plantings, and smaller gardens where hardy and attractive shrubs are desired.

Landscaping uses for Olearia coriacea

Olearia coriacea is primarily valued for conservation, but it also brings interest to landscapes. Its summer flowers provide subtle beauty, while its leathery foliage adds year round structure. It is an excellent choice for dry, exposed, or coastal gardens, as well as biodiversity plantings and lifestyle blocks. By growing Olearia coriacea, gardeners also contribute to the protection of one of NZ’s threatened native species, making it both a practical and meaningful choice.
