Olearia albida (Tanguru)

Olearia albida, commonly known as Tanguru, is a NZ native, evergreen shrub. It grows as a multi-stemmed bush bearing large and leathery, olive-green leaves held densely. The tree becomes adorned with clusters of white, daisy-like flowers through summer and autumn. It typically grows to 6 m tall and 4 m wide. Olearia albida is commonly included in a mixed planting, used in native revegetation projects which often include riparian areas, planted as a backdrop for smaller plants, or trimmed into a hedge.

How to grow Olearia albida (Tanguru) in NZ

Olearia albida grows best in NZ when planted in full sun or partial shade with free draining soils. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and naturally thrives in drier, exposed areas. Plant during autumn or spring to give roots the best chance of establishing before the extremes of summer or winter. Mulching around the base will help conserve moisture and reduce weeds. With minimal attention, Tanguru will quickly establish into a reliable and hardy native shrub.

Olearia albida (Tanguru) care tips

Caring for Olearia albida is easy thanks to its natural toughness. Water young plants during their first growing season to assist with establishment, but once mature, it is very drought tolerant. Fertiliser is rarely required, though a light application of general fertiliser in spring can encourage growth. Light trimming may be undertaken after flowering to maintain shape, but heavy pruning is not recommended. Its resilience makes Tanguru a dependable shrub for low maintenance planting.

Olearia albida (Tanguru) size, spacing, and growth rate

Olearia albida typically grows to 2–3 m tall and 1.5–2 m wide at maturity, forming a dense, upright habit. Growth is moderate, with plants developing steadily into their natural form. When planting in groups, space Tanguru about 1.5–2 m apart to allow for healthy development. Its size and compact habit make it suitable for smaller gardens, revegetation projects, and mixed native plantings where a medium sized shrub is required.

Landscaping uses for Olearia albida (Tanguru)

Olearia albida is most often used in ecological and restoration projects, but it also has value in landscaping. Its white flowers add brightness in summer, while its grey green foliage provides year round structure. Tanguru is well suited to lifestyle blocks, native gardens, and exposed sites where hardiness is essential. By planting Olearia albida, gardeners also support biodiversity and the protection of an uncommon NZ native species.
