Nandina 'Flirt'

Nandina 'Flirt' garden uses

Nandina 'Flirt' is ideal for low borders, groundcovers, and mass plantings thanks to its compact size and rich red new growth. It adds vibrant colour to containers, rock gardens, and mixed plantings, while its tidy, evergreen habit makes it perfect for small gardens or edging paths with year-round appeal.

How to grow and care for Nandina 'Flirt' in NZ

To grow Nandina 'Flirt' in New Zealand, plant it in a sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained soil. This compact and hardy shrub tolerates light frost and short dry periods once established. Water regularly while young, then only as needed. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to maintain healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Minimal pruning is required—remove any damaged or old stems in late winter to maintain a neat shape.

Nandina 'Flirt' size, spacing, and growth rate

Nandina 'Flirt' typically reaches about 40 cm tall and 50 cm wide in suitable conditions. Allow about 50 cm between centres for separate specimens, leaving room for mature foliage and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Use the mature spread as a guide when planting beside paths, walls, or neighbouring plants. Containers can limit overall size, so choose a pot that supports healthy root development. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust surrounding planting as needed.
