Commonly known as Heavenly Bamboo, this is a compact, evergreen shrub grown for its colourful foliage. New foliage in spring is purple-red, ages to become a soft-green colour, then develops purple and red tones in autumn. The foliage is complemented with small, white flowers in summer which are followed by bright red fruits. It typically grows to 1.2 m tall and 80 cm wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, some wind, periods of dry, and coastal environments. Heavenly Bamboo is a tidy plant that is ideal for planting around outdoor living areas, including in a mixed planting, planting as a backdrop for smaller plants, maintaining in a container, or using anywhere a hardy and attractive shrub is desired.
