Myrtle communis (NZ Myrtle)

Myrtus communis, known as the Common Myrtle or NZ Myrtle, is a dense, evergreen shrub prized for its fragrant white flowers, glossy aromatic foliage, and ornamental blue-black berries. Growing 2–3 metres tall, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for formal hedging, topiary, or scented gardens in warmer parts of New Zealand. Drought-tolerant once established, it suits Mediterranean-style and low-maintenance plantings. Its compact form and year-round interest make it a versatile and attractive addition to the garden.

How to grow Myrtus communis in NZ

Myrtus communis grows best in full sun and well-drained soil, ideally in a warm, sheltered location. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils and benefits from good air circulation. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce as it becomes drought-tolerant. Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy form. In colder regions, protect from heavy frost. It performs well in borders, hedges, containers, and Mediterranean-style gardens.

Myrtus communis care tips

Plant Myrtus communis in full sun for best flowering and dense growth. Use well-drained soil, and avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the plant is young. Prune lightly after flowering to shape and encourage bushiness. Apply mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed annually with a balanced fertiliser. In cooler areas of New Zealand, provide shelter from harsh frosts to protect foliage.

Plant size, growth rate, and spacing

Myrtus communis typically grows 2–3 metres tall and 1.5–2 metres wide, forming a dense, rounded shrub. It has a moderate growth rate, making it suitable for hedging, borders, or specimen planting. For hedges, space plants 60–80 cm apart to ensure a full and compact screen. For general garden use, allow 1.5–2 metres between plants to accommodate their natural spread. Regular pruning can help control size and encourage a neat, bushy form.
