Mussaenda frondosa

Dhobi Tree

Commonly known as the Dhobi Tree, this is a tropical plant favoured for its striking foliage. The lush and glossy, dark green leaves are complemented with the most amazing flowers in summer. An enlarged bract on the flowers produces an unusual white leaf. The white on dark green affords a wonder contrast. The flowers themselves are small and red. It grows as a rounded bush to about 1.5 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained that is sheltered and frost-free. The Dhobi Tree is commonly included in subtropical gardens, planted around outdoor living areas, or grown as an interesting specimen. It is often grown indoors as a potted plant and trimmed back after flowering.
