Metrosideros collina Tahiti, Dwarf Pohutukawa

Metrosideros Tahiti is an outstanding dwarf variety of Pohutukawa due to its compact form, attractive foliage, and showy flowers. New foliage emerges with a silver colouring and matures to become grey-green. The foliage serves as a lovely complement to the clusters of red-orange flowers as it grows to 1 m tall and the same wide. Metrosideros Tahiti is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, adding to a mixed planting, or mass planting for a wonderful display. This dwarf Southern Rata also suits container growing, being trimmed into a low hedge, including in a border, or being planted around outdoor living areas.

What are the landscape uses for Metrosideros Tahiti?

Metrosideros Tahiti is a compact, hybrid form of Metrosideros that is highly valued in landscaping for its small size, vibrant flowers, and year-round appeal. It is commonly used as a low hedge, border plant, or specimen shrub in gardens where a tidy, colourful feature is desired. Its bright red-orange flowers, which appear mainly in spring and sporadically through other seasons, make it perfect for adding seasonal interest to mixed plantings, native gardens, and coastal landscapes. ‘Tahiti’ is ideal for small gardens, courtyards, patios, and container planting due to its naturally rounded and compact growth habit. It is also highly suitable for coastal planting, as it tolerates salt spray and windy conditions well. Its neat form and low maintenance needs make it popular in both formal and informal designs, and it attracts birds like tūī, providing ecological value as well.

Metrosideros Tahiti care

Metrosideros Tahiti is generally very easy to care for, thriving in New Zealand’s coastal and temperate climates. It prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil, though it can tolerate poor soils, clay, and even rocky ground. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and also highly resistant to salt spray and strong winds, making it ideal for coastal planting. Regular watering is needed during its first couple of summers to help it establish, but after that, natural rainfall is usually enough. Pōhutukawa benefits from an occasional light trim if shaping is needed, preferably after flowering, though mature trees often need little to no pruning. It’s a good idea to mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid piling mulch against the trunk. Feeding is rarely necessary, but a general-purpose fertiliser in spring can encourage lush growth, especially for younger or potted plants.

What is the Metrosideros Tahiti growth rate?

Metrosideros Tahiti has a slow to moderate growth rate, typically adding about 20–40 cm of growth per year under good conditions. It is naturally compact and bushy, reaching around 1 metre tall and wide after about 4–5 years if left untrimmed. Growth is steady but not fast, making it excellent for low-maintenance hedges or specimen shrubs where you want a tidy shape without constant pruning. Growth can be a little quicker in warm, sunny, and sheltered locations with regular watering and feeding during the growing season.
