What are the landscape uses for the Metrosideros perforata?

Metrosideros perforata, commonly known as White Rātā or Climbing Rātā, is mainly used in landscaping as a climbing plant, screen, or groundcover. It is ideal for training over trellises, pergolas, fences, and walls, where its small, glossy green leaves and sprays of delicate white flowers create a soft, attractive effect. It can also be used to cover unsightly structures or to climb up trees, blending naturally into native-style gardens. When not given anything to climb, it can spread along the ground to form a dense mat, making it useful for stabilising banks and slopes. White Rātā is particularly popular in native restoration projects because it establishes easily, supports native wildlife like insects and birds, and is naturally resilient once established.

Metrosideros perforata care

Metrosideros perforata is generally very easy to care for, thriving in New Zealand’s coastal and temperate climates. It prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil, though it can tolerate poor soils, clay, and even rocky ground. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and also highly resistant to salt spray and strong winds, making it ideal for coastal planting. Regular watering is needed during its first couple of summers to help it establish, but after that, natural rainfall is usually enough. Pōhutukawa benefits from an occasional light trim if shaping is needed, preferably after flowering, though mature trees often need little to no pruning. It’s a good idea to mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid piling mulch against the trunk. Feeding is rarely necessary, but a general-purpose fertiliser in spring can encourage lush growth, especially for younger or potted plants.

What is the Metrosideros perforata growth rate?

Metrosideros perforata (White Rātā) has a moderate to fast growth rate compared to other Metrosideros climbers. Under good conditions—such as a sheltered spot with moisture and something to climb—it can grow up to 1 metre per year. Growth is usually quicker once the plant finds a structure or tree to attach to, as it naturally uses its wiry stems to scramble upwards. In colder or drier conditions, its growth will slow but still remain steady. Given time, it can cover large areas, making it highly effective for screening, groundcover, or naturalising in a native garden.
