How to Grow Metrosideros 'Fiji' in NZ

Metrosideros 'Fiji' grows best in full sun and well-drained soil and frost-free areas of New Zealand. This compact evergreen shrub or small tree produces bright red pōhutukawa-like flowers in summer and thrives in sheltered spots with good air circulation. Water regularly during the first year to establish deep roots, then only during extended dry spells. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage lush foliage and flowering. Light pruning after flowering will help maintain a tidy shape. Avoid planting in poorly drained or cold, frost-prone sites.

Metrosideros 'Fiji' Care Tips

Metrosideros 'Fiji' is a low-maintenance plant well-suited to coastal or sheltered gardens. Water regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots, then only during prolonged dry periods. Plant in full sun with well drained soil, and avoid wet or frost prone locations. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed growth.

Plant Size and Spacing

Metrosideros 'Fiji' typically grows to 1.5–2 metres tall and 1–1.5 metres wide, forming a compact, rounded shrub. It has a moderate growth rate and is ideal for low hedges, borders, or feature planting. For hedging or mass planting, space plants 80 cm to 1 metre apart to achieve dense coverage. If planting as a specimen, allow at least 1.5 metres of space to show off its natural shape.
