Growing Metrosideros carminea Successfully in NZ

Plant Metrosideros carminea in a sunny to partially shaded, sheltered position with well-drained soil. It prefers consistently moist soil and benefits from mulching to retain moisture. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while establishing. In cooler climates, provide frost protection for young plants to prevent damage. Train the vine along a trellis, fence, or support structure. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring, and prune lightly after flowering to shape or control its spread.

Metrosideros carminea Care Tips

Metrosideros carminea thrives in moist, well-drained soil and a sheltered position with full sun to part shade. Mulch annually and water regularly, especially in dry conditions. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring, and prune after flowering to manage growth. Protect from frost while young.

Plant Size and Spacing

Metrosideros carminea typically grows 3–6 metres tall when supported and spreads around 1.5–2 metres wide. Space plants 1.5–2 metres apart along a trellis or fence to allow room for climbing and lateral growth.
