Metrosideros carminea ‘Carousel’ is a variety of the commonly known, Pohutukawa and is also known as NZ’s Red Carpet. It is grown for its colourful flowers, foliage, and small stature. It carries glossy leaves which are dark green with a yellow margin. The foliage is adorned with masses of small, red flowers through spring and summer which nestle themselves into the foliage. It typically grows to 75 cm tall and 1.5 m wide, preferring a full sun or partial shade position for best results. It is tolerant of dry periods, coastal conditions, cool climates, and moderate frost but will benefit from being looked after while it is establishing. Metrosideros ‘Carousel’ is commonly included in a mixed or border planting, planted around outdoor living areas, planted around the base of larger trees, or maintained in a container. A mass planting gives an impressive display and is the best way to showcase this variety in NZ.
