Melicytus novae-zelandiae

Coastal Mahoe

Melicytus novae-zelandiae, commonly known as coastal mahoe or small-leaved mahoe, is a tough, spreading New Zealand native shrub. It typically grows to 1–2 metres tall and wide, featuring small, narrow leaves and wiry branches. Tiny, pale flowers appear in spring and are followed by purple berries on female plants, which attract native birds. This species is well adapted to coastal conditions, thriving in full sun and poor, dry soils. It’s ideal for erosion control, coastal revegetation, and low-maintenance native gardens.

Melicytus novae-zelandiae Details

Commonly known as Coastal Mahoe, this is a small, NZ native shrub that grows up to 2 m tall and the same wide. It has a multi-stemmed and upright growth habit bearing olive green leaves which tend to be leathery, larger, and darker when grown in shaded conditions. During spring it produces small, yellow-green, bell shaped flowers which turn into white berries with purple spotting. Best performance with this tree is achieved when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and periods of dry once established. This plant is commonly used in coastal plantings, added to tropical gardens, included in mixed plantings, or trimmed into a hedge.
