Melicytus micranthus (Swamp Mahoe)

Melicytus micranthus, commonly called Swamp Mahoe, is a low-growing native New Zealand shrub reaching about 1.5 m in height. It has small, glossy green leaves and produces tiny, pale yellow to white flowers in spring. This hardy shrub thrives in wet, swampy areas, making it ideal for planting in damp soils and alongside waterways. Melicytus micranthus provides excellent ground cover and serves as a habitat for native wildlife. Its dense, compact form makes it useful for erosion control and naturalistic planting schemes in wetlands or riparian zones.

Growing Melicytus micranthus Successfully in NZ

Melicytus micranthus (Swamp Mahoe) naturally grows in damp or swampy areas, making it an ideal choice for wetland restoration and low-lying gardens in New Zealand. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in moist, fertile soils. While it tolerates seasonal flooding, ensure it doesn’t dry out for extended periods. Once established, it is hardy and low-maintenance. This shrub is also great for attracting native wildlife and adds ecological value to natural landscapes.

Melicytus micranthus Care Tips

Water regularly during the first year to help Melicytus micranthus establish itself, especially during drier periods. It thrives in consistently moist soils, so mulching can help retain moisture. Prune lightly to remove dead or damaged growth and to achieve a tidy shape. This plant rarely needs fertilising but can benefit from a light feed in spring. Avoid planting in very dry or exposed sites, as it prefers sheltered, damp environments.

Plant Size and Spacing

Melicytus micranthus typically grows 1.5–3 metres tall and up to 2 metres wide. For restoration or natural plantings, space plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for natural spread. In garden settings, allow at least 1.5 metres of space for growth.
