Melicytus alpinus

Porcupine Shrub

Melicytus alpinus, commonly known as Porcupine Shrub, is a hardy native New Zealand shrub growing up to 2 metres tall. It features dense, spiny branches with small, narrow leaves that help reduce water loss in alpine and dry environments. This tough shrub thrives in well-drained, rocky soils at higher elevations, tolerating wind, frost, and drought. Melicytus alpinus is ideal for erosion control and naturalistic planting in alpine gardens, adding texture and shelter for native wildlife in challenging conditions.

Melicytus alpinus Details

Melicytus alpinus is a compact, small shrub which is nearly leafless. The lack of foliage gives this plant a porcupine-like appearance. The foliage that is present comprises small, dark green leaves housed within the network of branches. Inconspicuous flowers are followed by a white berry in summer. It typically grows to 80 cm tall and 1.2 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is slow growing but will tolerate extended dry periods, wind, frost, cool climates, and coastal environments. This shrub makes a wonderful addition to a mixed planting or rock garden and provides for something a little different in the garden.
