Lophomyrtus obcordata (Rohutu)

Lophomyrtus obcordata, commonly known as Rohutu, is a NZ native, evergreen shrub that typically grows to 4 m tall and 3 m wide. The leaves are heart-shaped, small, and held densely on short stems. These are adorned in summer with small yet showy, white flowers, which then turn into red-violet fruit. Lophomyrtus obcordata makes a great addition to a mixed planting or for planting around larger trees. With timely trimming, it also makes for a fantastic hedge.

Growing Lophomyrtus obcordata successfully in NZ

Lophomyrtus obcordata, a native NZ shrub, grows well in full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soils. It prefers a sheltered position, especially when young, and benefits from regular watering during dry spells. While it is hardy, protecting young plants from frost improves early establishment. This compact shrub is slow-growing and responds well to light trimming, making it suitable for hedging or formal garden borders. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Lophomyrtus obcordata care tips

Lophomyrtus obcordata thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils. Water the plant regularly during dry spells, especially while it is establishing. Apply mulch to retain moisture and reduce weed competition. Light pruning after flowering or in late summer helps maintain a tidy, compact shape. It is generally hardy, but young plants may need protection from heavy frosts. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained sites to prevent root issues. Feed annually with a slow-release fertiliser in spring.

Plant size, growth rate, and spacing

Lophomyrtus obcordata is a slow-growing evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach 3–6 metres tall and 2–3 metres wide in ideal conditions. It has a dense, upright growth habit. For garden use such as screening or native plantings, space plants 1.5–2 metres apart to accommodate their mature spread while encouraging natural form.

Lophomyrtus obcordata garden and landcaping uses

Lophomyrtus obcordata is well suited for native revegetation projects, coastal plantings, and mixed shrub borders. Its dense, upright form makes it ideal for screening and shelter, while the small, glossy leaves and white flowers add delicate texture and seasonal interest. It can be used as a feature plant in native gardens or to support wildlife, as its berries attract birds and flowers support pollinators. It also fits nicely into formal or low-maintenance landscapes that require an evergreen structure.
