Lophomyrtus bullata (Ramarama)

Ramarama, Bubble-leaf Shrub

Lophomyrtus bullata, commonly known as Ramarama, is a large, NZ native shrub growing up to 8 m tall and 2 m wide. It features thick, leathery, glossy, blistered leaves which are broad and oval-shaped. The leaves are dark green to yellow, mottled, and may be spotted with red, maroon, or purple-black. In summer, plants produce small, cream-coloured flowers which are followed by dark, red-purple berries. Lophomyrtus bullata is commonly used as a stunning backdrop for smaller plants, for screening, in native plantings, to contrast with other plant colours, or as part of a mixed planting in a large garden.

Growing Lophomyrtus bullata successfully in NZ

Lophomyrtus bullata (Ramarama) thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. It is naturally suited to coastal and lowland environments, tolerating wind, light frosts, and moderate exposure. To encourage healthy growth, water regularly during dry periods and mulch annually to retain soil moisture. While it is generally hardy, young plants benefit from shelter in exposed sites. Due to its susceptibility to myrtle rust, plant in open, well-ventilated areas and monitor for signs of disease.

Lophomyrtus bullata care tips

Lophomyrtus bullata prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting. Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. As the species is highly susceptible to myrtle rust, inspect foliage regularly and ensure good air circulation around the plant. A copper fungicide can be used to treat Myrtle Rust. Avoid overhead watering to minimise leaf wetness and the spread and development of Myrtle Rust. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.

Plant size, growth rate, and spacing

Lophomyrtus bullata is a slow-growing evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach 4–8 metres tall and 2–3 metres wide in ideal conditions. It forms a dense, upright structure with glossy, puckered foliage. For garden plantings or shelterbelts, space plants 1.5–2 metres apart to allow for natural form and airflow. For hedging, a closer spacing of around 1–1.2 metres is recommended.
