How to grow Lonicera nitida in NZ

Lonicera nitida, also known as Box Honeysuckle, thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, though it will tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during dry periods until the plant is established, and then it becomes relatively drought-tolerant. Pruning can be done in late winter or after flowering to maintain the shape or form of hedges. It’s ideal for topiary, hedging, and borders due to its dense, small-leaved foliage. Mulching annually helps conserve moisture and suppresses weeds. Avoid waterlogged sites for best results.

Lonicera nitida (Box Honeysuckle) care tips

Lonicera nitida (Box Honeysuckle) is easy to care for and thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, then only during dry spells. It responds well to pruning, making it ideal for hedges and topiary. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser and mulch annually to conserve moisture. This hardy plant is generally pest-free and low-maintenance, but avoid waterlogged conditions to keep its roots healthy.

Lonicera nitida (Box Honeysuckle) spacing for a hedge

For a dense hedge, space Lonicera nitida (Box Honeysuckle) plants 30–45 cm apart. This close spacing encourages the plants to knit together quickly, forming a compact and uniform hedge.

Plant size and growth rate

Lonicera nitida (Box Honeysuckle) typically grows to 1–2 metres tall and 1.5 metres wide if left untrimmed. It has a moderate to fast growth rate, often putting on 20–40 cm of growth per year, making it well-suited for hedging and topiary with regular trimming.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Lonicera nitida (Boxleaf Honeysuckle)? We are here to help.

Hi. Why is the 2.5 lt. container a 30cm height plant but the 1.5 and the 3.5 lt. is only 15cm. high? approximately how long would it take for the plants to reach around 1.5 mt.? Thanks so much

They are at different heights due to being recently trimmed to keep them bushy. I estimate 3 years to reach 1.5 m tall. This could be less if they are watered and fertilised regularly.
