How to grow Lonicera nitida 'Aurea' in NZ

Lonicera nitida 'Aurea', or Golden Box Honeysuckle, thrives in most New Zealand climates. Plant it in full sun for the best golden foliage colour, though it will tolerate partial shade. It prefers well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods until established. This cultivar responds well to pruning, making it ideal for hedging or topiary. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring and mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid wet, poorly drained sites.

Lonicera nitida 'Aurea' care tips

Lonicera nitida 'Aurea' thrives in full sun to maintain its vibrant golden foliage, but will also grow in partial shade. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly during dry periods until the plant is established. Prune in late winter or as needed to shape or maintain density, particularly when used for hedging and topiary. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring, and mulch annually to retain moisture. Avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root problems.

Plant Size and Spacing

Lonicera nitida 'Aurea' typically grows to 1–1.5 metres tall and 1 metre wide if left untrimmed. For hedging, space plants 30–45 cm apart to ensure a dense, even form. It has a moderate to fast growth rate, making it well-suited to regular shaping and clipping.
