How to grow Leucospermum 'Lorita' in NZ

Leucospermum 'Lorita', also known as pincushion protea, thrives in free-draining, slightly acidic soil and a full sun position. It suits New Zealand’s warmer, frost-free regions and should be planted in a raised or sloped bed if drainage is poor. Avoid using fertilisers high in phosphorus and opt for a low-phosphorus, native-plant fertiliser instead. Water deeply during dry spells, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushiness, and avoid heavy mulching close to the base to reduce the risk of stem rot.

Leucospermum 'Lorita' care tips

Plant in full sun with free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Only use low-phosphorus fertilisers when feeding this plant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Prune lightly after flowering to shape and promote new growth. Avoid heavy mulching near the base to prevent stem rot. Protect from frost, especially when young, and ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal issues.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Leucospermum 'Lorita' typically grows to 1–1.5 metres tall and 1–1.2 metres wide. For mass planting or hedging, space plants 1–1.2 metres apart to allow for airflow and full form. It has a moderate growth rate, generally reaching full size within 2–3 years under ideal conditions.
