How to grow Leucospermum 'High Gold' in NZ

Leucospermum 'High Gold' grows best in a sunny position with very well drained soil. It thrives in sandy or free draining conditions and performs poorly in heavy or waterlogged soils. Improve drainage before planting if necessary and avoid adding excessive fertiliser. Water regularly during establishment, then only during prolonged dry periods. Good airflow around the plant is beneficial. With suitable growing conditions, this shrub develops into a healthy specimen that flowers reliably each year.

Leucospermum 'High Gold' care tips

Leucospermum 'High Gold' is relatively easy to care for once established. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages bushy growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood as recovery can be slow. Apply only low phosphorus fertilisers formulated for proteaceous plants if feeding is required. Ensure the soil remains free draining and avoid excessive watering. Removing spent flowers will improve appearance and help keep the plant looking fresh and attractive.

Leucospermum 'High Gold' size, spacing, and growth rate

Leucospermum 'High Gold' typically grows to around 1.5 to 2.5 metres tall and a similar width, depending on local growing conditions. Growth is moderate, allowing the plant to establish steadily while developing a dense framework. Space plants approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart to provide room for mature growth and good airflow. Under favourable conditions, this shrub becomes a striking landscape feature with impressive floral displays and year round structure.

Landscaping uses for Leucospermum 'High Gold'

Leucospermum 'High Gold' is ideal for coastal gardens, Mediterranean style landscapes, mixed shrub borders, and feature plantings. The brilliant golden flowers create a dramatic focal point and attract pollinators to the garden. It works well as a standalone specimen or grouped with other drought tolerant plants. The flowers are highly sought after for floral arrangements, adding further value. Its bold appearance and reliable performance make it a standout addition to many landscape designs.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Leucospermum 'High Gold'? We are here to help.

Hi I bought a leucospermum from you- and it has died unfortunately. In reading, it looks like i shouldn't have given it fertilizer when I planted it? I'm wondering if it is too late to plant another? I planted in a great full sun spot, but it does get a frequent easterly breeze/wind. We are near a beach. Do you think this matters? Thanks so much. Ann Worthy Stephenson

Hi, the key is to not use any phosphate containing fertiliser and definitely no fertiliser in the hole at planting of any kind. You can still plant another, it will just be a matter of keeping water up to it.
