Leptospermum scoparium Red Damask, commonly known as Tea Tree or Manuka, is a popular, NZ native shrub grown for its impressive flowering. It produces masses of double, dark pink-red flowers with a darker centre during spring and summer. The foliage comprises small, dark green leaves and releases a pleasant fragrance when brushed against. This evergreen typically grows to 2 m tall and 1 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is a hardy plant and will tolerate dry periods, frost, coastal conditions, and a wide range of soil conditions, barring extreme wet or dry. Leptospermum scoparium Red Damask is commonly used as a backdrop for smaller plants, included in a mixed planting, trimmed into a hedge, or planted around outdoor living areas.
