How to grow Leptospermum 'Kea' in NZ

Leptospermum 'Kea' grows best in a sunny position with soil that drains freely. Choose a site that receives plenty of sunlight and is protected from strong winds. It performs well in most garden soils provided they are not constantly wet. Improve the soil with compost before planting to help support healthy root growth. Water regularly while the plant establishes so the root system develops strongly.

Leptospermum 'Kea' care tips

Leptospermum 'Kea' is relatively easy to maintain once established. Water during extended dry periods especially while plants are young. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages fresh growth. Applying mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feeding with a general garden fertiliser in spring will support healthy foliage and abundant flowering.

Leptospermum 'Kea' size, spacing, and growth rate

Leptospermum 'Kea' typically grows to around 2 metres tall and about 1.5 metres wide when mature. Growth is moderate and plants gradually form a dense rounded shrub with fine foliage. When planting multiple shrubs allow around 1.5 metres between plants so they have room to develop and airflow can move through the foliage. With good sunlight and reasonable soil fertility plants establish quickly.

Landscaping uses for Leptospermum 'Kea'

Leptospermum 'Kea' is an excellent shrub for borders, native gardens, and flowering feature plantings. It can be planted in groups to create a colourful display or used as a specimen shrub in smaller gardens. The flowers contrast beautifully with the fine foliage and attract bees to the garden. In New Zealand landscapes it is often used to add seasonal colour and texture.
