Lavandula stoechas (Spanish Lavender)

Spanish Lavender

Lavandula stoechas, known as Spanish Lavender, grows as a compact shrub and carries masses of small, purple flower spikes from spring through summer. The foliage is green-grey and complements the darker flowers nicely as it grows to 50 cm tall and the same width. Lavandula stoechas is commonly used in cottage gardens, included in mixed plantings and borders, trimmed into a hedge, or grown in a container. A mass planting gives a truly dramatic display.

How to grow Spanish Lavender in NZ

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) grows well in New Zealand when planted in sunny, free-draining positions. Choose a spot with at least six hours of direct sun daily, and avoid heavy or waterlogged soils. Mix in compost or coarse sand to improve drainage if needed. Plant young lavender in spring or autumn, spacing them 50–70 cm apart to allow for airflow and full growth. Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth, avoiding cutting into old wood. A light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring supports healthy blooms.

Lavandula stoechas care tips

Lavandula stoechas, or Spanish Lavender, is easy to care for in New Zealand gardens. Plant it in full sun with free-draining soil and water only during dry periods once established. Trim lightly after flowering to keep it compact and encourage more blooms, avoiding cuts into old wood. A light spring feed with slow-release fertiliser will support healthy growth and vibrant flowers.

Spanish Lavender size, spacing, and growth rate

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) typically grows 40–70 cm tall and 50–70 cm wide, forming a neat, bushy mound. Space plants about 50–70 cm apart to allow good airflow and room to develop naturally. It has a moderate growth rate, usually reaching its full size within two to three years under ideal sunny, free-draining conditions.
