Lavender 'Hidcote' (Lavandula 'Hidcote')

5 from 1 customers

Lavender 'Hidcote' is a stunning variety that grows as a compact shrub and carries masses of short, violet-purple flower spikes through spring and summer. The foliage is grey-green and complements the darker flowers nicely as it grows to 50 cm tall and the same width. Lavandula 'Hidcote' is commonly used in cottage gardens, included in mixed plantings and borders, planted around outdoor living areas, or maintained in a container. It is also well-suited to mass planting on a bank or using as a groundcover, and in both instances will produce an outstanding display.

How to grow Lavender 'Hidcote' plants in NZ

Lavender 'Hidcote' grows best in full sun with free-draining soil and low humidity. Choose a warm, open spot sheltered from strong winds, and avoid areas with poor drainage. Improve soil before planting by adding compost or sand to increase aeration. Space plants 40–60 cm apart to allow for airflow and prevent fungal issues. Water regularly during establishment, then only during extended dry periods. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and avoid cutting into old wood. A light spring feed with a low-nitrogen fertiliser will help promote strong flowering.

'Hidcote' Lavender care tips

Prune 'Hidcote' Lavender lightly after flowering to maintain its dense, compact shape and encourage further blooming. Avoid cutting into the woody base, as this can limit regrowth. Water young plants regularly during dry spells until well established, then only as needed. Mulch with gravel or light compost to suppress weeds and keep the roots cool, but avoid piling mulch against the stem. Feed in spring with a low-nitrogen fertiliser to support healthy flowering and strong growth.

What is the Lavender 'Hidcote' planting distance?

Lavender 'Hidcote' should be planted 40 to 60 cm apart to allow for good airflow and healthy growth. Closer spacing creates a dense hedge effect, while wider spacing is ideal for individual plants or informal borders. This distance helps reduce disease risk and allows each plant to develop a neat, compact form.
