Lavandula viridis

Lavandula viridis, commonly known as Green Lavender, is a distinctive evergreen shrub valued for its aromatic green foliage and unusual creamy white flower bracts. Unlike traditional lavenders, it offers a unique appearance while still providing fragrance, texture, and long lasting garden appeal. This hardy plant performs well in sunny New Zealand gardens and attracts bees and other beneficial pollinators. Lavandula viridis is ideal for borders, containers, cottage gardens, and Mediterranean style landscapes.

How to grow Lavandula viridis in NZ

Lavandula viridis grows best in a sunny position with free draining soil. Choose a location that receives plenty of direct sunlight and avoid sites prone to winter waterlogging. Improve heavy soils with compost and coarse material before planting to enhance drainage. Water regularly during establishment, then only occasionally once the plant is established. Good airflow around the foliage helps maintain plant health and encourages strong growth and flowering.

Lavandula viridis care tips

Lavandula viridis is easy to maintain and requires minimal care. Apply a light dressing of fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh growth. Avoid cutting back into old woody stems. Water only during prolonged dry periods and ensure the soil remains free draining. Regular trimming and good drainage will help keep the plant attractive and vigorous.

Lavandula viridis size, spacing, and growth rate

Lavandula viridis typically grows to around 60 to 100 centimetres tall and wide, forming a dense rounded shrub. It has a moderate growth rate and establishes quickly in suitable conditions. Space plants approximately 60 to 80 centimetres apart when creating borders or mass plantings. This spacing allows healthy airflow while enabling the plants to develop into an attractive and continuous display of fragrant foliage and flowers.

Landscaping uses for Lavandula viridis

Lavandula viridis is ideal for Mediterranean gardens, cottage gardens, pathways, borders, containers, and low hedges. Its unusual flower colour provides contrast among traditional flowering plants while the fragrant foliage adds year round interest. It combines beautifully with rosemary, santolina, ornamental grasses, and drought tolerant perennials. Whether planted individually or in groups, it provides texture, fragrance, and visual appeal to a wide range of landscape styles.
