Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence'

What are the garden uses for Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence' in NZ?

Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence' is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly grown as a specimen, used as a hedge (both trimmed and untrimmed), added to a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is an excellent complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both formality and elegance to a space. Bay trees are also popular plants for growing in pots, and their evergreen nature and somewhat slower growth habit make them ideal for pool gardens. Little wonder Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence' is so popular in gardens!

Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence' care tips

Care for Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence' by matching moisture and feeding to its growing season. Water deeply during dry weather while the roots are establishing. Apply a suitable fertiliser in spring and refresh the mulch to retain moisture. Remove damaged growth and trim lightly when necessary to maintain a balanced shape. Check new shoots for pests and keep competing weeds away from the root zone. Regular checks help you respond promptly to changing growing conditions.

What does Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence' need to grow well?

Laurus nobilis 'Pride of Provence', often referred to as the Laurel tree, grows best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained soil. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, coastal environments, and humid climates. Wind protection is essential to ensure a better-formed tree that will grow prolifically. These trees do not thrive on poorly drained sites or in areas with excessive watering.
