Laurus 'Bay Gold'

What are the garden uses for Laurus 'Bay Gold' in NZ?

Laurus 'Bay Gold' is a much-loved shrub in NZ gardens. It is most commonly grown as a specimen, used as a hedge (both trimmed and untrimmed), added to a mixed planting, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants. It is an excellent complement to a modern or cottage garden, bringing both formality and elegance to a space. Bay trees are also popular plants for growing in pots, and their evergreen nature and somewhat slower growth habit make them ideal for pool gardens. Little wonder Laurus 'Bay Gold' is so popular in NZ gardens!

Laurus 'Bay Gold' care tips

Care for Laurus 'Bay Gold' by matching moisture and feeding to its growing season. Water deeply during dry weather while the roots are establishing. Apply a suitable fertiliser in spring and refresh the mulch to retain moisture. Remove damaged growth and trim lightly when necessary to maintain a balanced shape. Check new shoots for pests and keep competing weeds away from the root zone. Regular checks help you respond promptly to changing growing conditions.

Laurus 'Bay Gold' size, spacing, and growth rate

Laurus 'Bay Gold' typically reaches about 5 m tall and 4 m wide in suitable conditions. Allow about 4 m between centres for separate specimens, leaving room for mature foliage and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Use the mature spread as a guide when planting beside paths, walls, or neighbouring plants. Containers can limit overall size, so choose a pot that supports healthy root development. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust surrounding planting as needed.

Landscaping uses for Laurus 'Bay Gold'

Use Laurus 'Bay Gold' for mixed borders, feature planting, and layered garden designs. Position it where its natural form can be appreciated and allow sufficient space for mature growth.
