Arabian Jasmine

Jasminum sambac, commonly known as Arabian Jasmine, is an evergreen plant which can be grown as a shrub or allowed to climb. It produces masses of beautiful and white, highly scented flowers through spring and summer. It features rich, green leaves which are held densely and provide a lovely contrast to the flowers. This Jasmine can grow up to 4 m tall if it has something to climb, otherwise as a shrub it will be 60 cm tall and 1.5 m wide. Jasminum sambac is ideal for cottage and “white” gardens, planting around outdoor living areas, using as a groundcover, mass planting on a bank, allowing to climb a trellis, or maintaining in a container.

Is Jasminum sambac edible?

Yes, Jasminum sambac (commonly known as Arabian Jasmine) is considered edible and safe for culinary use, particularly its fragrant white flowers. The blooms are widely used in teas, such as jasmine tea, where they are either infused or blended with green or white tea leaves to impart their sweet, floral aroma. In some cultures, the flowers are also used to flavour desserts or garnish dishes.

Can Jasminum sambac grow indoors?

Yes, Jasminum sambac (Arabian Jasmine) can be successfully grown indoors, provided it receives the right conditions. It needs bright, indirect light. A sunny windowsill with some protection from harsh afternoon sun is ideal. This tropical plant prefers warm temperatures (18–24°C) and appreciates humidity. Use a well-draining potting mix, and keep the soil evenly moist but not sodden. Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced liquid fertiliser to promote healthy growth and flowering. To keep its shape and encourage bushiness, lightly prune after flowering. If it becomes leggy, more frequent trimming may be needed. With the right care, Jasminum sambac can produce its sweetly fragrant, white blooms indoors throughout the year, especially during warmer months.

Jasminum sambac care

Jasminum sambac (Arabian Jasmine) is a tropical evergreen shrub or climber cherished for its intensely fragrant white flowers. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions, preferring full sun to light partial shade and well-draining, fertile soil. In cooler climates, it’s best grown in pots so it can be brought indoors during winter, as it is sensitive to frost. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the growing season, but avoid overwatering or allowing the soil to become soggy. Reduce watering slightly in winter. Feed with a balanced, liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks from spring through early autumn to encourage lush growth and continuous flowering. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and stimulate branching.

What are the Jasminum sambac common names?

Jasminum sambac is known by several common names around the world, the most popular being Arabian Jasmine.

Is Jasminum sambac poisonous?

Jasminum sambac (Arabian Jasmine) is not considered poisonous to humans, cats, or dogs. It is generally regarded as non-toxic and safe to grow in gardens or indoors around pets and children. The flowers are even used in culinary applications such as teas and desserts in many cultures. However, as with any plant, consuming large quantities of leaves or stems is not recommended, as it may cause mild digestive upset due to the fibrous plant material. Overall, it is a safe and fragrant choice for ornamental and indoor planting.
