Illicium 'Lemon Sorbet' (Yellow Anise Tree)

How to grow Illicium 'Lemon Sorbet' in NZ

Plant Illicium 'Lemon Sorbet' in a partially shaded location with shelter from strong winds and afternoon sun in hot climates. It prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter but will adapt to a range of soil types once established. Water regularly during dry periods in its first year to help roots develop, then reduce watering as it becomes more drought-tolerant. Plant in spring or autumn for the best establishment and seasonal growth.

Illicium 'Lemon Sorbet' care tips

Mulch around the base annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and remove any damaged or crowded branches. Avoid planting in very dry, exposed areas to prevent leaf scorch and promote lush, year-round foliage.

Illicium 'Lemon Sorbet' size, spacing, and growth rate

This variety typically grows to around 1.5–2 m tall and 1–1.5 m wide, with a moderate growth rate. Space plants about 1–1.2 m apart for hedge or screen plantings. Its neat, upright form makes it a suitable choice for smaller gardens, understorey planting, or use as a feature shrub in mixed borders.
