Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ is a variety of the commonly known, Japanese Holly, and is grown for its columnar growth habit. It carries small and glossy, dark green leaves which are held on stiff, upright branches. Green-white flowers are produced in spring and result in small black berries. It typically grows to 4 m tall, and 80 cm wide though can be trimmed to smaller sizes. Best performance with Japanese Holly is achieved when it is positioned on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site in either full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of dry periods, frost, cool climates, and coastal conditions. The relatively fine texture and columnar growth habit of Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ sets it apart from other landscape plants making it ideal for adding to a mixed planting, using to line a path or entrance, or planting as a backdrop for smaller plants. This Ilex is a great plant for a small garden.
