Ilex crenata, commonly known as Japanese Holly, is a slower growing variety that is favoured for its dense foliage. Small and glossy, dark green leaves are held off short stems. The foliage is complemented with small, white flowers in summer which are followed by black berries in autumn. It grows with a rounded shape to about 1.5 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is positioned in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of dry periods, cool climates, moderate frost, and coastal environments. The Japanese Holly is perfect for including in a mixed planting, trimming into a hedge, maintaining in a container, or planting around outdoor living areas such as pools and the like. Ilex crenata is also commonly used for topiary and bonsai.
