Ilex JC Van Tol, commonly known as the Smooth Leaf Holly, features handsome foliage and berries. It carries smooth and glossy, dark green leaves which are held on slender stems. Small, white, mildly fragrant flowers are produced in spring and result in distinctive, red berries. The berries last well into winter and are great for attracting birds. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 2.5 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Best growth is achieved when it is planted on a well-drained site in either full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of dry conditions, cold environments, frost, and coastal conditions.
