English Holly

The English Holly, Ilex aquifolium, is an evergreen shrub grown for its glossy foliage and colourful berries. The spiny, dark green leaves are adorned with small, white flowers in spring which result in red berries through autumn and winter. The berries add an interesting dimension to this plant and are great for attracting birds. This English Holly grows densely with an upright and spreading habit to about 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this shrub are achieved when it is planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. Ilex aquifolium are tolerant of dry periods, cool climates, frost, and coastal environments. As the hedge start to grow opt for a little and often trimming regime. This helps to keep the plants bushy. The most aesthetic English Holly hedge is achieved by lightly trimming it in spring and again in autumn.
