Hydrangea ‘Merritt’s Supreme’ is a lovely variety that features large, purple-blue flower heads from summer through autumn on alkaline soils or rose-pink on acid soils. The flowers sit perfectly above the dark green foliage and develop red tones in autumn. It grows as a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with a more or less rounded form to about 1.2 m tall and the same wide but can be trimmed as necessary. Best growth is achieved in a full sun or partial shade position on a well-drained, sheltered site with a slightly acidic soil. It is hardy to cool climates, frost, and short periods of dry. Hydrangea ‘Merritt’s Supreme’ is a great variety for mixed plantings, underplanting larger trees, growing in a container, as an informal hedge, as a backdrop for smaller plants, or using to contrast with other leaf forms and flower colours.
