Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bodensee’ is a bigleaf variety that features balls of soft-blue flowers from summer through autumn. The flowers age to pink so plants will often have two flower colours present. The flower colour can also be changed to pink by adding lime to the soil. The flowers are complemented with large, green leaves that sit neatly with the flowers. It grows as a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with a rounded form to about 1.2 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is grown in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site with a slightly acidic soil. This Hydrangea is hardy to cool climates, frost, and short periods of dry. Hydrangea ‘Bodensee’ is a great variety for mixed plantings, including in cottage gardens, maintaining in a container, or growing as an informal hedge. It also makes for a lovely backdrop for smaller plants, planting around outdoor living areas, or for using to contrast with other leaf forms and flower colours.
