Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blue Prince’ is a bigleaf variety that features soft- blue flowers from summer through autumn. The flowers remain a blue colour when grown on acidic soil but will turn pink on alkaline soils. These are complemented by large, green leaves that sit perfectly with the flowers. It grows as a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with a rounded form to about 1.2 m tall and the same wide. It responds well to trimming and can be pruned back to a small crown during winter. Best growth is achieved in a full sun or partial shade position on a well-drained, sheltered site with a slightly acidic soil, and it is hardy to cool climates, frost, and short periods of dry. Hydrangea ‘Blue Prince’ is a great variety for mixed plantings, underplanting larger trees, growing in a container, as an informal hedge, as a backdrop for smaller plants, or using to contrast with other leaf forms or flower colours.
