How to grow Hydrangea aspera in NZ

To grow Hydrangea aspera in NZ, plant it in a sheltered position with partial shade and fertile moisture retentive soil. Protection from strong winds and hot afternoon sun gives the best results. Planting in autumn or spring allows strong root establishment. Water regularly, particularly during dry periods. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and keeps roots cool through summer.

Hydrangea aspera care tips

Hydrangea aspera is relatively low maintenance once established. Keep soil consistently moist and avoid letting plants dry out. Feed with a general fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Minimal pruning is required, usually limited to removing dead or damaged wood after flowering. Avoid heavy pruning as flowers are produced on older growth.

Hydrangea aspera size, spacing, and growth rate

Hydrangea aspera typically grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and wide. Space plants at least 2 metres apart to allow full development and good airflow. It has a moderate growth rate, establishing steadily before forming a large rounded shrub. Its size and bold foliage make it best suited to larger gardens or as a feature plant.

Landscaping uses for Hydrangea aspera

Hydrangea aspera is ideal for woodland gardens mixed shrub borders and feature planting. The large leaves add strong texture and contrast alongside finer leaved plants and ferns. It works well in shaded areas where few large shrubs thrive. This hydrangea is perfect for creating a lush layered garden look in sheltered positions.
